Endangered Species

Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat

The northern hairy-nosed wombat of northern Australia is one of the world's rarest marsupials. It lives in grasslands and acacia and eucalypt woodlands. The wombat has short, powerful legs with claws that it uses for  for digging burrows. It has never been abundant and the only living animals now reside in east-central Queensland, in Epping Forest National Park. The species is found in an area of only 3 sq km (1.2 sq mi). The reasons given for its decline include drought, human persecution, loss of habitat loss and competition with introduced rabbits, cattle and sheep. Overgrazing by cattle and drought appear to be the main factors accounting for its decline.
