Ecobeetle travels to Brazil
Many
people are familiar with the splendors of the Amazon but a lesser known secret
is the Brazilian Pantanal. The Pantanal is one of the world's largest
wetlands covering hundreds of thousands of square kilomaters of southern
Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay. In the wet season from January to March, the
Pantanal rivers overflow their banks flooding the flat land for many
kilometers. There is an explosion of colors in the flowering aquatic flora
and resident mammals gather on the few dry hills. In the dry season, the water
receds into the rivers and lakes which become home to migratory and resident
birds in huge numbers. If it is wildlife you want to see, then the Pantanal is
the place for you; it has one of the largest diversities of wildlife in
the Americas. It is home to hundreds of species of birds and mammals. In
October, Ecobeetle took a look.
We toured with Munir Nasr, owner of
Natureco
operating out of the city of Cuiaba in the Pantanal. Our tour included three
days on the Cuiaba River with stops at riverside lodges, and one night at a
lodge in the meadows and dry forests. The wildlife viewing was outstanding
from anacondas, howler monkeys, otters, and macaws, and the accomodations
were pleasantly simple. Ecobeetle gives the Pantanal a thumbs up as a must-see
destination.
