Critically Endangered Marsupials
RUFOUS
HARE-WALLABY
– a nocturnal marsupial found in arid and
semi-arid locations of Bernier and Dorre Islands
off Western Australia. Research has shown that the
decline of hare wallabies coincided with the loss
of the aboriginal practice of winter fires. These
fires provided food for the rufous hare wallaby as
it let to the regeneration and growth of
vegetation in different stages. Other factors for
its decline include loss of habitat in
southwestern Australia, and primarily predation by
introduced species such as cats and foxes.
