Critically Endangered Marine Mammals

NORTH ISLAND HECTOR'S DOLPHIN – The world’s rarest marine dolphin, these small shy marine mammals are found off the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand. Hector’s Dolphins can be identified by some very distinct markings including a rounded black dorsal fin, a black face, black flippers, black tail and a crescent-shaped black mark that runs between the top of each eye. Adults measure  1.2 - 1.4 metres long.
The North Island population could plausibly number fewer than 50 mature individuals. The main threat to Hector's Dolphind is entanglement in gillnets. Additional threats include pollution and disease.
