Endangered
Species
Cheetah

The cheetah is the fastest land mammal and today
is found primarily in the grasslands, savannah and
moderate woodlands of Africa. There is a reported
almost 50% reduction in cheetah populations over
the last 20 years. The causes of this decline
include over-hunting of its main food
source, the gazelle, poaching, and habitat
destruction. These factors as well as a high cub
mortality rate lead to this species endangerment.
To compound the issue, cheetahs are very similar
genetically which makes captive breeding of
cheetahs in zoos extremely difficult as ideal
mating conditions are hard to achieve.
