The African Elephant is the the largest land animal and one of the most popular.
Today, Africa's elephants are found only south of the Sahara Desert where as
centuries ago, the African elephant inhabited most of the
African continent. The
decline in elephant populations is due to several factors including range loss
and poaching for ivory. Hunting of the African elephant is now banned in several
countries but the most serious threat today to the African Elephant is from
illegal ivory poaching.
